Why is Post-op Massage important?

Inflammation and swelling start to occur following plastic surgery because the lymphatic system has been disrupted. The swelling is fluid in the extracellular tissues that is drained by the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is disrupted during plastic surgery. The fluid then sits in the soft tissues because the outflow has been disrupted. When the fluid sits for a long time, it triggers secondary inflammation which can lead to fibrosis (hardening of the soft tissue). Fibrosis can impact the final appearance of your body after full recovery and can take a long time to get rid of, if ever. Post-op massage moves the fluid out of tissue and decreases secondary inflammation and fibrosis.
